Excellent study on Pediatric AKI in today’s NEJM

Today’s NEJM has an excellent Original Article from Dr Goldstein’s group on Pediatric AKI- the results of the AWARE study. It also has an Editorial on it.  This large, prospective, multinational study of the epidemiology of acute kidney injury in children and young adults in ICUs showed that acute kidney injury occurred in one quarter of patients during the first 7 days after ICU admission. Severe acute kidney injury conferred an incremental risk of death by day 28 and was associated with increased use of renal-replacement therapy and mechanical ventilation and longer stays in the ICU.
